The Grand Canyon softball program announced its 2021 season schedule for its first action in nearly a full year.
Â
"We are very excited to announce the 2020-2021 GCU Softball schedule and we appreciate the patience of our supporters while we worked out some of the kinks," Lopes head coach
Ann Pierson said.
Â
It will have been 335 days since GCU's last competition when the season begins on Feb. 11 with a game against Utah at GCU Softball Stadium. On Feb. 12, the Lopes are set to host the GCU Kickoff Tournament, welcoming Weber State, Oregon and Montana. Throughout the weekend, GCU will face Weber and Montana twice before ending with a game against the Ducks. Â
Â
The Lopes play 29 games at home and 18 games on the road, including games at Arizona State (April 6) and Arizona (April 14) before the WAC Tournament takes place May 13-15 in Seattle.
Â
The Lopes travel to San Diego, California, on the second weekend of February to play San Diego State, San Diego and UC-San Diego. The Lopes then will be back at home to host the GCU Purple Classic, where they will welcome Oklahoma, ASU, Iowa State, New Mexico and Portland State. The GCU Classic will be a dual-host tournament with ASU. Â
Â
"We are very fortunate to have powerhouse teams like Oklahoma, Oregon, Baylor, Iowa State and Arizona State as part of our four home tournaments," Pierson said. "Every team coming to GCU this year will be challenging and great competition."
Â
The Lopes are set to host the Lopes Up Classic the second weekend of March, when they will face Baylor, Northern Illinois and UTEP. Following the Lopes Up Classic, GCU will welcome New Mexico State, Southern Utah and Idaho State for the GCU Invitational before kicking off WAC play.
GCU is set to face six Power Five opponents, including Pierson's alma mater, ASU, in Tempe.Â
The Lopes will also travel to Tucson for a doubleheader at Arizona before taking on WAC opponents: California Baptist, Tarleton and Seattle U.
"We always look forward to the opportunities to learn from great programs," Pierson said. "We are truly blessed with our incredible administration and medical staff, as they have allowed us the chance for a season, while keeping us healthy and safe. We're looking forward to getting back on the field. It's been way too long!"
