The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will play a pair of intrasquad scrimmages on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
Fans will not be allowed into the stadium to watch, but a livestream will be available through GCU TV with a play-by-play announcer and color commentator covering the 90-minute match. The stadium atmosphere will be similar to a normal gameday, complete with full uniforms for both teams, in-stadium music and public address announcing.
"We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to have our awesome GCU soccer family participate in two intrasquad scrimmages in beautiful GCU Stadium," Lopes head coach
Chris Cissell said. "The team has been working extremely hard since August 4, and this will give the players a great opportunity to show themselves, their teammates and the entire coaching staff how far we have come in such a short time. With our season being moved to the spring due to COVID-19, we thought this would be an excellent opportunity to try to set up these events and treat them as much like real games as possible. We are really excited about this opportunity and I know the players will be ready to perform at a very high level."
The Lopes return 22 players from last year's team while six newcomers joined the squad over the spring and summer. Junior midfielder
Marleen Schimmer transferred from Arizona State and will highlight the newcomers after scoring 11 goals with five assists in 35 games for the Sun Devils. Freshman midfielder
Brenna Alderson also will be a player to watch as she enters her collegiate career after two straight United Soccer Coaches All-American honors while at Perry High School in Gilbert.
Six of the 22 returners are seniors with two having the ability to climb higher into the GCU Division I record books. Forward
Camryn Larson enters her final year at GCU in fifth place for goals scored at 10, while defender
Hannah Edwards has played 5,159 minutes, good for sixth most in GCU's DI history.
