The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team opened its home schedule on Friday with a 5-0 win over Abilene Christian 5-0 but then fell 5-0 to No. 6 Cal Poly.Â
Lopes beat Abilene Christian 5-0
On Day 1 of the Canyon Classic, GCU got its first win at home with the sweep over Abilene Christian. The second, fourth, and sixth pairs began the match. On Court No. 2, seniors
Hannah Towne and
Jessica Stansfield gave the Lopes a 1-0 lead with a win in two sets, both 21-9.
Junior
Natalie Honzovicova and sophomore
Katie Hess swept the match on Court No. 4 for GCU, 21-10 and 21-11.Â
The top Lopes pair clinched the dual win in two straight sets. Junior
Bella Bauman and sophomore
Teagan DeFalco won 21-13, 21-17.
On Court No. 5, junior
Taylor Jarzombek and sophomore
Madi Relaz moved to 9-0 on the season as the GCU pair beat the Wildcats 21-12, 21-10.
To finish the dual and secure the 5-0 sweep, sophomore
Anaya Evans and junior
Katie Sarber dominated Court No. 3 winning 21-10, 21-11.
Lopes drop dual to No. 6 Cal Poly 5-0
To start the match, Honzovicova and Hess fell in two sets on Court No. 4 (21-15, 21-16).
It was a tight match on Court No. 2 with Towne and Stansfield forcing a third set. The Lopes took set one 21-18, lost in the second set 21-19 and then lost in extra points in the final set 17-15.Â
On Court No. 3, the Mustangs secured the dual win as Evans and Sarber lost 21-15 in both sets.
Bauman and DeFalco lost in the first set 21-14 and, after a well-fought set, they fell 21-18 on Court 1.
The previously undefeated Jarzombek and Relaz had their first pair loss on the season (9-1) when they fell in three sets to the Mustangs (21-23, 21-18, 13-15).
Up next, the Lopes are back for Day 2 on Saturday with two more matches. GCU will face Houston Baptist at noon and San Diego City College at 2:30 p.m.
