Grand Canyon junior pitcher
Ryan Denhart was named WAC Pitcher of the Week after an impressive performance against South Dakota on Wednesday night while sophomore third baseman
Savannah Tourville earned WAC Hitter of the Week distinction for her performance against South Dakota and Lehigh.
'We are proud of Ryan and Sav for their weekly honors," GCU head coach
Ann Pierson said. "They both started the weekend's tournament so strongly, and I have no doubt they would have continued their successes throughout the weekend and season."
In Game 1 of the evening, Denhart took the circle and tossed her first no-hitter of the season. Denhart had a perfect game going into the top of the fifth inning but a batter reached via error. In five innings, she struck out two batters while getting six fly outs and seven ground outs.
"Ryan was dominant against a really talented hitting team in South Dakota," Pierson said. "She had multiple pitches working along with her change-up and, when that is happening, I really like our odds."
Tourville also earned her first WAC Hitter of the Week award after batting an impressive .833 on the day. The sophomore was 3 for 3 with three RBIs against South Dakota and 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored against Lehigh. In the field, Tourville did not record an error in the two games.
"Sav did a great job of driving the ball, jumping on strikes and finding every hole in the defense," Pierson said. "She was productive in every at ba,t whether it was getting on or driving in runs. She is a grinder at the plate and a proven tough out.
"It is a hard way for the season to end but I am so proud of my team for showing such toughness and resilience up to last week. They stuck together and stayed with the process."
With the unanticipated suspension of athletic events, Denhart and Tourville will take the momentum of their latest outings into their next appearances — whenever they may be.
