After collecting a third-team Preseason All-American honor in December, Grand Canyon senior pitcher
Kade Mechals added a first-team honor to his preseason resume.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced its Preseason All-America teams and named Mechals to the first team, recognizing the right-hander as one of the six best starting pitchers in Division I. The recognition comes days after Mechals was named WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and weeks after he was selected to the Preseason All-America third team by
Collegiate Baseball.
The other first-team All-American starting pitchers come from Louisville, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M and Georgia.
Mechals was a first-team All-WAC selection in his inaugural season at the Division I level last year. The McMinnville, Oregon, product was the nation's co-leader in regular-season wins with 11, the most by a GCU pitcher in 28 years. He was also the first Lopes pitcher to reach the 100-strikeout mark since 2004 and posted the best ERA (2.16) in the program's 14 D-I seasons.
GCU's season gets underway against top-25 Oklahoma State on Friday, Feb. 14, at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
