The Grand Canyon women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 64-54 defeat to Utah Valley at GCU Arena.
A slow start proved costly for the Lopes as GCU (15-9, 10-3 WAC) went scoreless for the first eight minutes of the game against Utah Valley (11-14, 8-5 WAC).
The Lopes were led by their bench with sophomore guardÂ
Venla Varis scoring 13 points and sophomore guardÂ
Tianna Brown adding 11 points. In her final home game, GCU senior power forwardÂ
Da'jah Daniel chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Daniel only played five minutes in the first half because of two early fouls.
The Lopes trailed 13-4 after the first quarter but pulled within 33-26 at the halftime break.
A 10-0 run in the third quarter helped GCU cut the Wolverines lead to 39-37 when Daniel scored inside at the 6:38 mark. Utah Valley opened an eight-point lead before ending the quarter ahead 51-45.
In the final period, GCU pulled within 56-52 at the 5:13 mark but could get no closer the rest of the way. Utah Valley scored a 3-point play and a 3-pointer to lead 62-52 with 2:48 left.
UVU was led by Jordan Holland with 20 points and Eve Braslis with 17 points.
GCU is back in action on Thursday at New Mexico State.
