Men's basketball, women's swimming represented for December
Grand Canyon student-athletes have their sights set on more than just winning on the competition field. With the help of the Academic and Student-Athlete Development staff, the Lopes are looking to provide leadership in the classroom and the community in addition to their roles on their respective teams.
Each month, GCULopes.com features two Lopes excelling in all three of these phases as Student-Athletes of the Month. Congratulations to the honorees for December: basketball player Alessandro Lever and swimmer Emily Muteti.

| In the community Lever volunteered to help GCU students move into dorms in August and September. Lever was an advocate in helping teammates register to vote for the election. He also participated in other volunteer events with his team. |
In the community Muteti volunteered in this fall's voter registration drive on campus. In past semesters, she has volunteered to hand-pack meals for Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization. |
| On the court Lever has been in integral part of the Lopes since making the All-WAC first team as a freshman. After 105 games, Lever ranks second on GCU's all-time scoring list with 1,418 points, which also ranks 34th nationally among active Division I players. He is having a career-best shooting season at 56.5% from the field and 47.4% on 3-pointers. |
In the pool Muteti already has won WAC Swimmer of the Week twice this season. She earned the honor because of her performance against California Baptist. Muteti contributed to two relay victories and took first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 54.82 in the 100 butterfly was a pool record. |
