HOUSTON —The Grand Canyon women's basketball team defeated Houston Baptist 79-76 in its final nonconference road game on Friday.
"This is a game we wanted to win the rebounding war finally," GCU head coach Molly Miller said. "And we did. I was very proud of that statistic."
The Lopes outrebounded the Huskies 40-31 while forcing 20 turnovers with 14 steals.
GCU has forced at least 20 in all seven games this season. Entering Friday's game, the Lopes ranked No. 1 nationally in forced turnovers per game at 26.2.
Five Lopes put up double-digit points, led by senior guard Ny'Dajah Jackson with 18 points. The other four Lopes included freshman center Katie Scott (15), junior forward Kennedi Shorts (13), junior guard Laura Piera (12) and sophomore guard Taylor Caldwell (10). Caldwell also tallied team highs for rebounds (career-high eight) and steals (four).
"We have to adjust more as the game goes on with how it's being called," Miller said. "I know we want to go for the steal but we need a solid half-court effort, especially when we're coming out of scramble mode, we gotta get solid before we take chances."
GCU (6-1) led for the majority of the game, but HBU (3-3) pulled ahead 70-68 at the 6:34 mark in the fourth quarter. After the Huskies took the lead, Miller called a timeout to regroup.
"In that timeout, all we needed was defensive stops," Miller said. "I wanted three stops in a row and it was one, two, three."
The Lopes knotted things back up at the 2:55 mark with a made free throw by Shorts after drawing a foul.
Caldwell got a crucial steal and passed ahead to Shorts for a fastbreak layup that put GCU ahead 72-70 with 2:42 to go.
GCU stretched the lead to 74-70 when freshman Tiarra Brown's steal led to a Caldwell jumper. Five Lopes free throws followed to secure the win down the stretch.
"We had done some free throw rebounding in practice and you saw TC (Caldwell) got that last offensive rebound off of a free throw and that was probably the game for us right there," Miller said.
Next, the Lopes are back at GCU Arena at 2 p.m. Monday against Arizona Christian.
