WAC assigns spring dates to fall sports

GCU to host women's soccer tournament; volleyball set for January start
The Grand Canyon fall sports teams who have continued preparation since their seasons were suspended in August now have their WAC spring season dates, including a WAC Women's Soccer Tournament at GCU Stadium and a January start for women's volleyball.
The conference soccer seasons will begin in February, the conference announced Wednesday, with play leading up to an April 14-18 WAC Women's Soccer Tournament at GCU and the WAC Men's Soccer Tournament on the same dates in Las Vegas.
GCU also hosted the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament in 2017, when the Lopes reached the semifinals in their first season of Division I postseason eligibility.
"We feel very honored and blessed to be able to host the WAC Tournament at beautiful Grand Canyon University," Lopes women's soccer head coach Chris Cissell said. "This is a wonderful opportunity for GCU to showcase our first-class facilities and our wonderful campus. Our awesome GCU soccer family is excited for the upcoming season and we will be ready to host the WAC Tournament in our delicious home."
The conference play format for women's soccer will be a double round robin with back-to-back games between the same teams at the same site in most weeks. Two of the weeks will be single-match weeks over the eight-week regular season.
Men's soccer will play a single round robin with six participants.
The Lopes women's volleyball team, coming off its most successful Division I season at 24-6 last year, will begin a nine-week WAC schedule in the final week of January. The slate will include a double round robin with two teams playing back-to-back matches at the same site. The WAC Women's Volleyball Tournament will be held April 1-3 at New Mexico State.
The WAC Cross Country Championships will be held Feb. 27 in Seattle. That prompted the cancellation of the 2021 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships because the date would have conflicted with the cross country event.
