The Grand Canyon women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking double-overtime thriller to Colorado State on Sunday night at GCU Stadium.
The Rams (3-1-1) broke a scoreless tie with a golden goal in the 106th minute of the match. CSU forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto crossed a ball from the right wing into Caeley Lordemann, who was battling for position with a Lopes defender. Lordemann took a touch to control possession and wound up for a right-footed strike that sailed just over the outstretched arms of GCU freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Garthwaite for the 1-0 decision.
Lordemann's goal abruptly ended a match that was scoreless for over 105 minutes and put an unfortunate wrap on a season-long four-game homestand for GCU (1-5).
GCU led Colorado State in shots (16-12), shots on goal (7-6) and corner kicks (7-3) but could not put the ball in the back of the net.
GCU was the first to pose a threat offensively when freshman forward
Sophia Roberts got a shot off on goal just 55 seconds into the match. It was the first of five shots on goal in the first half for the Lopes. In the 15th minute, freshman forward
Ellie Busik fired a shot on goal that was just tipped over the crossbar by the keeper.
Colorado State's biggest first-half threat came moments later when sophomore Gracie Armstrong was open in space, but her shot was tipped away by Garthwaite and nicked off the far post.
Freshman
Jaycee Iranshad had some of the Lopes' best looks in the second period and finished the night with a game-high six shots. Her 69th-minute shot on goal from inside the box was saved and represented the last on-target shot of the night for GCU.
Neither side posed much of an attack in the first overtime, sending the match to a second 10 minutes of extra time before Lordemann's game-ending goal put a wrap on the match with less than five minutes remaining in the second overtime.
With the season-opening homestand behind them, the Lopes head on the road for a Friday matchup at UC Santa Barbara (1-1-2) with kickoff set for 7 p.m. (Phoenix time).
