The Grand Canyon baseball team will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of the spring training schedule with a night exhibition game at Salt River Fields on March 17.
"It's a tremendous opportunity for our guys to go toe-to-toe with the big leaguers," GCU head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "They roll out the red carpet for our team and do a really good job of giving our players that MLB spring training experience for a day."
GCU previously matched up against the Diamondbacks in 2017, when 5,176 fans attended the exhibition at Salt River Fields.
"We want our program to move and play in big ballparks and regionals and super regionals and, hopefully, Omaha (site of the College World Series) to the point where the surroundings and this type of environment is somewhere they can feel comfortable," Stankiewicz said following GCU's 2017 spring training experience. "I think any time that you can get them in front of some people and some competition, that's obviously really good, I think it will help us develop in the future."
The 2017 exhibition drew a large turnout of GCU supporters, including a large contingent of Havocs on the right-center field berm.
The exhibition will come about one month into GCU's 2020 schedule, which will be released at a later date.
