Grand Canyon pitcher
Pierson Ohl was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday.
Ohl, also the WAC Freshman of the Year, becomes the first GCU player to earn postseason All-American honors at the Division I level.
"For a guy who came in asking me for at bats, it's good to show him he can be an elite pitcher," pitching coach
Rich Dorman said. "Pierson is coachable and made tremendous strides over the year. We can't wait to watch his continued improvement at GCU."
A Simi Valley, Calif., native, Ohl finished conference play with a sparkling 2.37 ERA, the second-best mark in the conference. He only improved as the season progressed, posting a 1.80 ERA in his final four starts in WAC play.
Overall, Ohl went 7-5 with a 3.45 ERA and was thrown into the fire immediately with TCU and USC as two of his first three opponents. He earned the win in his first career start, a win over Ball State, while also helping lead the Lopes to a series win at USC.
Ohl tossed a complete game at Chicago State on April 26, limiting the Cougars to just one run. In the final regular-season series, he tossed 6 2/3 innings and did not allow an earned run against Sacramento State. The freshman finished second with 57 innings pitched and led the conference with only 1.58 walks per game.
Allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work, Ohl was the winning pitcher in GCU's first-ever WAC Tournament win.
The GCU freshman joins a list of 20 other starting pitchers who earned the distinction at the national level. Ohl was the WAC's only pitching representative and the only conference player selected besides California Baptist outfielder Chad Castillo.
