Lopes teams outscore WAC foes to repeat honor
The WAC Commissioner's Cup is making a home in Phoenix.
Grand Canyon repeated as the WAC Commissioner's Cup victor, claiming the all-sports award in each of the program's first two years of eligibility. GCU won eight WAC championships during 2018-19 to give the Lopes a total
of 109.75 points, 16 more than runner-up New Mexico State.
GCU outscored last year's championship point total by nine points and won by a greater margin this year. WAC Commissioner's Cup points were awarded based on regular-season and WAC postseason finishes in the nine-member conference's 19 sports.
"This honor is a reflection of how dedicated and talented our student-athletes and coaches are," GCU Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught said. "They deserve credit for their performances in competition and all the practices, training sessions and meetings that most people never see. We are proud that we are continuing the success and striving for more."
GCU claimed titles in the WAC tournaments or championship meets for men's soccer, women's and men's indoor track and field, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis and women's track and field. Lopes men's and women's tennis also won regular-season titles.
Entering the spring season, GCU trailed UT Rio Grande Valley by two points and was ahead of Utah Valley by 1.75 points and New Mexico State by 4.75 points. The Lopes then scored in the top three of all eight spring sports, including top-two finishes in six of them to overtake UT Rio Grande Valley and pull away from Utah Valley and New Mexico State.
Prior to GCU winning the WAC Commissioner's Cup in its first attempt last year, New Mexico State had won the trophy for three consecutive years.
This year's program victory was led by the Lopes' track and field teams scoring 30 points, five more than Utah Valley in the four championship meets combined. The GCU tennis teams also outscored any other WAC program with 11 1/2 points, edging New Mexico State by a half-point.
