After leading Grand Canyon in five offensive categories this season, senior shortstop
Shea Smith was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region third team on Thursday.Â
Â
The honor is the first for the graduating senior, who earned her degree in business management in April.
Â
A native of Waddell, Arizona, Smith led the Lopes in batting average (.396), runs (47), hits (72), total bases (95) and walks (17) en route to an All-WAC first-team honor at the conclusion of the regular season. She started all 57 games for GCU, amassing a team-best 182 at bats, nine doubles, one triple and four home runs.Â
Â
Smith tallied 22 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games for the Lopes this season and was a crucial part of a GCU defense that averaged 0.53 double plays per game, good for 11th in the country. The senior was also named WAC Player of the Week twice this season.
