Michael Finke went beyond a hot stretch and carried into a torrid tear to win WAC Player of the Week for a second consecutive week.
Finke, a 6-foot-10 power forward, averaged 32.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 67 percent from the field in the Lopes' two home victories last week. Finke set a career scoring high with 38 points on Wednesday against Eastern New Mexico, topping the 36-point mark that he had set two weeks earlier. He also made a career-high six 3-pointers to set the WAC individual scoring high for the season.
After scoring 27 points in the second half Wednesday, Finke scored 24 second-half points in Saturday's win against CSU Bakersfield while grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds. Finke fueled a Lopes rally, scoring 14 consecutive GCU points as the Lopes took a second-half lead in the 73-69 victory on his Senior Night.
"That was fun," Finke said. "I want to do whatever I can to help the team win. They wanted me to score there so it was good stuff."
Finke made 14 of 20 shots from the field Wednesday and then went 7 for 11 on Saturday.
"He's been in a Power Five conference, been in big games and we need a guy that can score like that," GCU head coach
Dan Majerle said. "That's the guy we can go to. It's good to have a fifth-year guy who has a lot of poise and can score in different ways."
