RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sophomore
Jordon Keeton gave the Lopes offense light with a pinch hit RBI single in the top of the fifth, but the Grand Canyon softball team couldn't get anything going on Saturday afternoon as the Lopes (23-14, 5-1 WAC) fell to California Baptist (15-21, 2-4 WAC), 10-1, at John C. Funk Stadium.
The Lopes held an 11-game win streak through last night's doubleheader sweep, as the streak ended with today's loss to the Lancers.
"Overall it was a good series," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We saw just what we thought we would see in California Baptist. Athletic, strong, talented and well-coached.
"The first two games were good battles and I was really pleased with our grit and fight. Today was a different story. We made mistakes and let the game get away.
"(Kellye) Springstead is a very good pitcher and she kept our hitters off balance and took us out of our game plan," Pierson said. "I'm looking forward to getting home and back to work to fix some hiccups as we head into next weekend with CSU Bakersfield."
The Lancers struck first in the bottom half of the third by capitalizing on a pair of fielding errors from the Lopes, allowing CBU to plate an unearned runner for the 1-0 lead.
CBU used a slow roller to short stop to send a second runner home from third base and followed with a two-run single to left field to lead, 4-0, after the third frame.
The Lancers continued the scoring in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-run home run to left center to lead, 6-0.
Pinch hitter Keeton prevented the shutout for the Lopes with her RBI single that dropped in right field to send
Taylor Olsen home from second. The freshman led the inning off with a standup double to right center field.
CBU answered with a two-out 2 RBI double to the left field corner to go ahead, 8-1, in the bottom of the fifth frame.
The Lancers ended the game with a two-run home run to center field for the 10-1 final.
The Lopes return home for the next two weekends, as GCU continues the WAC schedule with a three-game series against CSU Bakersfield on Friday April 5 and Saturday April 6 at GCU Softball Stadium.
