Grand Canyon junior guard
Carlos Johnson was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 6 team, as voted on by the district's coaches.
Johnson led the Lopes in scoring at 14.3 points per game despite coming off the bench for 18 of his 34 appearances and averaging 24.3 minutes per game. He shot 49.0 percent from the field, 32.7 percent from 3-point range and 78.1 percent from the free throw line while also averaging 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
During the WAC Tournament, Johnson became one of six players in the nation to post 30-point scoring games on successive nights this season. After a career-high 31-point game against Seattle last Thursday, the Phoenix Shadow Mountain High School product established a new career-best mark of 35 points that was the highest WAC Tournament scoring total since Utah's Keith Van Horn scored 37 in 1997. Johnson was named to the All-WAC Tournament team for averaging 25.0 points and 6.7 rebounds.
When Johnson served GCU as a sixth man, he posted three consecutive 20-point games off the bench. At the time in February, he was one of six players in the nation to do so as a reserve.
Johnson, also a second-team pick for All-WAC, made a remarkable in-season improvement to his 3-point shooting, going from making 16 percent (6 for 36) over the first 16 games to hitting 42 percent (26 for 62) over the final 18 games.
The NABC District 6 includes members of the WAC and Big Sky Conference.
