SAN DIEGO – The Grand Canyon softball team ended the Campbell/Cartier Classic on a high note, as the Lopes defeated UC Santa Barbara 3-1 on Sunday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Lopes (4-6) avenged a tournament-opening, 4-1 loss to the Gauchos (3-5).
GCU saw solid pitching performances from junior
Brianna Aguilar (1-1), sophomore
Ryan Denhart and sophomore
Lexy Coons, who earned her first save of the season.
The pair of senior third baseman

Lilly Bishop each had a pair of hits, while freshmen
Taylor Olsen and
Savannah Tourville and senior center fielder
Taylor Kaye each tallied an RBI.
UCSB struck first in the top of the first frame with an RBi single up the middle to go ahead 1-0 early on.

Shea Smith and an error from the Gauchos third baseman loaded the bases for the Lopes in the bottom of the first. Tourville capitalized with an RBI single to left field to send Nicoletti home to tie the game, 1-1.
An RBI sacrifice fly from Olsen sent
Sierra Smith home for the 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kaye reached on an RBI fielder's choice, sending sophomore pinch runner
Taylor Tetone home for the 3-1 lead.
GCU held the Gauchos scoreless in the seventh for the two-run victory. The Lopes return home next weekend to host the GCU Purple Classic with Boise State, North Dakota, Yale and Michigan State visiting GCU Softball Stadium.
