SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon softball team saw hot bats from
Kaileigh Holland,
Gianna Nicoletti and
Shea Smith, but the Lopes (2-5) fell to UC Santa Barbara, 4-1, and Middle Tennessee, 7-5, on the first day of the 2019 Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Holland finished the day 3-7 with four RBI, a double and a home run, while Nicoletti was 3-7 with an RBI and a pair of triples.
Shea Smith was strong from the plate as well, going 3-7 with two doubles and a walk.
GAME ONE
UC Santa Barbara (3-1) plated two runners in the bottom of the first on a two-out bloop single to left center field to start the scoring.
GCU came back and got on the board in the middle of the third inning with a two-out RBI double to left center field from
Kaileigh Holland, sending
Sierra Smith through home plate.
The Lopes tallied four-straight lead-off hits in innings two through five but stranded 11 total baserunners on the day.
Gianna Nicoletti tripled to left field wall in the top of the sixth to give GCU a scoring opportunity with just one out on the board, but the Lopes weren't able to capitalize.
Shea Smith was 2-3 on the game with a double and a walk, while
Sierra Smith was 1-4 and scored the Lopes only run of the game.
GAME TWO
Holland came through with her second RBI of the day with a bouncing single through the left side gap to send
Savannah Tourville home for the run in the bottom of the first.
Middle Tennessee (3-3) came right back in the top of the second with a two-out 2 RBI double to the left field wall. The Blue Raiders added three more runs in the top of the third to lead, 5-1.
Holland added a second home run to her 2019 resume with a yard ball over the left field wall, bringing home pinch runner
Christine Bellavia with her to bring the Lopes within two, 5-3.
Taylor Olsen continued the scoring for the Lopes with a high pop-up, as a Middle Tennessee error in the infield allowed
Jordon Keeton to go home for the one-run game, 5-4.
The Blue Raiders came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a one-out double, sending
Yessie Morrison in to pitch for the Lopes.
Nicoletti hit her second triple of the day down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth, sending
Taylor Kaye home to bring GCU within two, 7-5.
GCU put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but grounded out to come up short of the comeback.
The Lopes continue the 2019 Campbell/Cartier Classic tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. (PT) against Northern Illinois.
