Lopes bump up 2 spots from 2018 finish
Grand Canyon beach volleyball earned a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll at No. 16.
The Lopes improved two spots after finishing the 2018 season ranked No. 18 with a 13-16 record.
GCU started 2018 ranked No. 10 and stayed in the top 20 throughout the season. The 2019 preseason ranking marks the third consecutive season that the Lopes were placed in the top 20 to start competition.
The Lopes lost five seniors at the conclusion of 2018 with the most notable departure being All-American Molly Turner, whose early-season partners Katie Pyles and Kelli Iverson also were seniors. GCU returning group is headed by junior Hannah Towne, who played the last 18 matches of 2018 alongside Turner on court one.
The 2019 season carries one of GCU's toughest schedules, featuring 14 opponents in the preseason top 20. The Lopes face four top-five opponents in No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Florida State and No. 5 Hawai'i, which they host at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium on March 21.
