The Grand Canyon softball program announced its schedule for the 2020 season, following a season with a historic win as the first GCU team to defeat a No. 1 opponent in any sport.
Â
"We're very excited to announce the 2020 GCU softball schedule," Lopes head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We are fortunate to host five NCAA tournament teams from the 2019 season and compete against 10 total 2019 NCAA tournament teams."Â
Â
GCU begins its season Feb. 6, when it opens its GCU Kickoff Tournament against Stanford at GCU Softball Stadium. The Lopes also will welcome Weber State and New Mexico for the weekend, when they will face each team twice.
Â
The Lopes play 32 games at home, including a visit from Arizona State, and 24 games on the road before the WAC Tournament takes place in Kansas City.
"We will be hosting four tournaments in our beautiful GCU Softball Stadium," Pierson said. "This allows us the luxury of our weather and keeping the kids in school."Â
Â
The Lopes travel to Waco, Texas, to play in the Getterman Classic at Baylor and then will be back at home to host the GCU Purple Classic, where they will host Drake, Utah State and Cal State Northridge.
GCU heads to Fullerton, California, on the last weekend of February to compete in the Judy Garman Classic for a tough weekend facing Colorado State, Cal Poly, Texas Tech, Cal and Boise State.
"We're excited to get back to Baylor and Cal State Fullerton, where we will continue to see top competition," Pierson said.
Â
The Lopes are set to face five Pac-12 opponents, including Pierson's alma mater, Arizona State, at home.Â
"We're very excited to host the Devils and start a long-time relationship across the Valley," Pierson said.
GCU also will play games at Arizona and Oregon before the WAC Tournament.
Â
"And as always, the WAC continues to get stronger each year, with all opponents returning top athletes," Pierson said. "This will be another highly competitive and challenging season that we are looking forward to."
