LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Grand Canyon women's soccer team began WAC play on a high note Friday night, as the Lopes grabbed a 2-1 victory at New Mexico State.
GCU (2-8-1, 1-0 WAC) was aggressive early, forcing a corner kick in the fourth minute of the match to set up its first goal. The scoring started when Lopes redshirt freshman forward

Both teams were aggressive in the first half, taking six shots apiece but the Aggies were unable to find the back of the net with GCU freshman goalkeeper

GCU continued the scoring when an Aggies foul led to a free kick in the 33rd minute. Junior defender
Hannah Edwards used it to find the right foot of freshman forward
Raeanne Jones in the box. Jones, coming off an injury layoff, redirected the ball at close range before it hit the ground to net her first career goal.
"It was a great effort by the team in general," Lopes head coach
Derek Leader said. "We scored two fantastic goals, which was a great start to conference play. It always feels good to get a win in Las Cruces."
The second half started off quietly as the Lopes took just two shots. The Aggies attempted four shots, netting one in the 74th minute before GCU's defense held onto the 2-1 lead. Garthwaite made three saves in the half, giving her five saves overall.
The two goals by GCU marked its highest scoring output of the season and was the Lopes' first victory since they beat Stetson in their Aug. 22 season opener.
"We spent some time working on playing in the final third and it paid off," Leader said.
Although the Aggies were given seven corner kicks, the Lopes were able to hold them off and open conference play victorious for the second consecutive year.
The Lopes head to Edinburg, Texas, next to continue WAC play at UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
