Grand Canyon head coach
Andy Stankiewicz announced a loaded 2020 baseball schedule, typical of recent years for the rising Lopes program.
GCU's 2020 slate features seven NCAA tournament teams, including three that advanced to the super regional round. For the first time since 1999, GCU will host both in-state foes in Arizona and Arizona State.
"It's really exciting to be able to play Arizona and Arizona State," said Stankiewicz, who is set to enter his ninth season as the Lopes head coach. "That's a big deal for us. We're excited that we're allowed to play one there and one here (against each team). We hope that can be a continual thing. They've got the beautiful facilities and so do we. It just makes sense. It'll be great for the state of Arizona, for our alumni, our players. Hopefully, it's the beginning of a nice, healthy, competitive rivalry."
The Lopes host the Sun Devils on April 21 and the Wildcats on May 12. GCU treks to east Phoenix to play ASU on April 7 and to Arizona's home in Tucson on April 14.
Continuing a trend of exciting opening weekends, Oklahoma State will pay a visit to GCU Ballpark for a three-game weekend series that opens on Feb. 14. The Cowboys, coming off of a super-regional appearance, are set to make a return trip to Phoenix after opening the 2017 season at GCU.
"It'll be exciting," said Stankiewicz, whose team opens a season on home soil for a sixth straight year. "Last time Oklahoma State was here, the new stadium wasn't even started. I'm sure that they'll be excited to come down and play in typically great weather. For us, it's a nice three-game series against a perennial collegiate baseball power. It's an exciting draw for our fans. Brazell (Field) should be buzzing on opening weekend."
Oregon will follow that series with a midweek visit to GCU Ballpark, the first-ever meeting between the Lopes and the Ducks.
Combined with a three-game series at Stanford and a late-season midweek game at USC, the Lopes will face a program-record five Pac-12 opponents, coming off of a season where they posted a 4-3 record against the conference.
"We've always been a program that's wanted to challenge our guys," Stankiewicz said. "It works out well. It's great to have Oregon in on the Tuesday after opening weekend. That will be exciting. We've never played the Ducks, and they're good in everything they do. We go to Stanford. It's an opportunity for our program to grow and challenge ourselves. Stanford has been hosting regionals every year. Getting into that environment for a three-game series, we want to be that program that's going to regionals, that's the design. Why not get out there and play these teams that are typically hosting regionals?"
A mid-March road trip will send GCU back to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and one of college baseball's cathedrals in Baum-Walker Stadium. The Lopes will play a two-game midweek series against the Razorbacks, a 2019 College World Series qualifier. The two-part road trip wraps at Baylor, where a three-game weekend series will mark the first meeting between the programs since 1994.
"We tell our players all the time, you should be excited looking at the schedule and the challenges that are in front of you," Stankiewicz said. "If we can meet these challenges head on, which I really believe we can, it's just going to make our program stronger in the long haul. Now it's time to get out there and start to play really good baseball."
GCU hosts reigning Atlantic-10 champion Fordham in addition to a full slate of regional competition, including Cal State Northridge, UNLV, New Mexico and Pacific.
WAC play opens up at home against Chicago State on March 20. In addition to the Cougars, the Lopes will host New Mexico State, Utah Valley and Sacramento State. GCU will hit the road for series at UT Rio Grande Valley, Seattle U, California Baptist, CSU Bakersfield and Northern Colorado.
"The WAC schedule lines up fine for us," Stankiewicz said. "Every weekend, you've got to play well. Our first goal is to come in first in the regular season and then win the WAC Tournament. It will always be that way. Last year, we fell short in both. This year, we hope to change that."
With an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line, the WAC Tournament will again be held at Mesa's Hohokam Stadium and will run May 20-24.
