MESA, Ariz. - Grand Canyon did not allow an earned run to Seattle U, but three early errors proved costly as the Lopes fell 3-2 in their tournament opener.
Starting pitcher
Jake Wong went eight innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs. The junior set a new career-high in strikeouts with 11, surpassing a 10-strikeout performance against Penn State on March 8.
Held to one hit and no runs through five innings, GCU mounted a late rally to pull within a run. The Lopes scored a run each in the seventh and eighth innings.
For the first time in the game, the Lopes got the leadoff runner aboard in the seventh on a single by
Ian Evans.
Tyler Wyatt came up with the clutch hit of the inning, doubling to left-center with two outs to score Evans from third.
Wong's most dominant inning came in the eighth when he was well over the 100-pitch mark. He drew a lazy grounder to begin the inning before retiring the final two batters he faced on four-pitch strikeouts.
Carrying the momentum over from Wong, GCU got back-to-back leadoff singles to start the eighth. A pinch-hitting
Brock Burton hit one through the right side before
Quin Cotton found a hole in the left side. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position with one out, and Evans drove in Burton from third on a groundout.
The Lopes went down in order in the ninth.
Early errors cost the Lopes. Seattle U scored two unearned runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead after an error on a ground ball and an error on a sacrifice bunt.
GCU's third error came in the fourth inning, allowing a runner to advance to second on a single. That runner came around to score Seattle's third run of the game.
Redhawks' starter Jake Prizina limited GCU to one run on four hits over his 6.2 innings of work. He retired 17 of the first 18 batters he faced.
The Lopes will return to tournament play tomorrow at 3 p.m., awaiting the winner of the 11 a.m. game which features No. 2 Sacramento State and No. 5 CSU Bakersfield.
