DENVER - Grand Canyon closer
Mick Vorhof was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday morning. Vorhof became the first GCU pitcher to pick up a save in three consecutive outings since the program returned to Division I for the 2014 season.
"Mick's been that steady senior," pitching coach
Rich Dorman said. "This is his fourth year. He's got an opportunity to try to get three WAC Championships in his four years here. He's hungry. He's been a leader from the start. He's a reliable guy to have down there and fills up the strike zone. I've got a ton of confidence in him."
Vorhof made his debut for the week on Tuesday against UNLV. He picked up a pair of strikeouts to open the ninth, allowed one single, and coaxed a ground ball to end the game.
In the series opener against Utah Valley on Friday night, Vorhof relieved
Jake Wong for the ninth. The right-hander got three consecutive ground balls to seal the GCU win.
Vorhof's toughest task came on Sunday as GCU eyed a series sweep. The senior was asked to get the four-out save, entering a bases-loaded situation with the go-ahead run on base in the eighth inning. Vorhof got a lazy fly ball to right to end the eighth and got two groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth.
In all, Vorhof tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone.
Vorhof becomes the second weekly award winner for GCU in 2018. Previously,
Jake Wong earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors after his opening-night heroics against TCU.
The Lopes get back to work on Tuesday, hosting Arizona at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark at 6 p.m.
