The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team ended their season with a three-match winning streak at home. The Lopes topped Utah on Thursday night before downing San Diego State's club team and San Diego City College in 5-0 sweeps Saturday morning.
"Our beach volleyball family has certainly had to overcome adversity this season," head coach
Kristen Rohr said. "Our record does not reflect the passion, commitment and dedication have shown throughout the long months of the season. We have built a strong foundation for next year and with it, high expectations."
In the first match of the day, the Lopes did not allow the opponent to score more than seven points in a set as GCU cruised to five consecutive straight-set victories. The Lopes only trailed once, at 1-0 of one total set of the ten played against the Aztecs.
The second match of the day was paused after the first three matches to honor the five seniors that have dedicated their time, energy and part of their lives to GCU.
Jordyn Sanchez,
Kelli Iverson,
Katie Pyles,
Emily Reinking and
Molly Turner were honored and all played against San Diego City College.
"I would also like to recognize our seniors who have represented GCU throughout their four years here," Rohr said. "They will be missed and have set in place a strong legacy for the future."
The first matches against SDCC included wins by Sanchez and her partner Reinking, in the No. 5 pairing, along with a win by
Madi Relaz and partner
Katie Pyles in the No. 3 pairing. Reinking and Sanchez did not allow their opponent to score more than a combined 10 points between the two sets and Sanchez finished her GCU career with the match-winning kill.
After the short break to honor the seniors, the No. 1, 2 and 4 pairings got underway as the Lopes continued their streak of not relinquishing a set. However, the Lopes allowed the Knights to score in double digits for the first time over the course of the day.
Jamie Walsh and
Jessica Clark handled their opponents 21-4, 21-10 on their way to clinching the overall match for the Lopes.
Iverson and her partner
Taylor Jarzombek downed their opponents in straight sets, 21-15, 21-8. Iverson followed Sanchez by ending her GCU career with the match-winning kill.
Turner and partner
Hannah Towne topped their SDCC opponents 21-8, 21-15 as the Lopes secured the sweep on senior day. Towne finished the day and the season with the final kill of the day.
The Lopes finished the season 13-16 while being nationally ranked for the second consecutive season.
