CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior
Jessica Gajewski had a season-best 25 points to guide the Grand Canyon women's basketball team to its fifth conference victory and an opponent sweep, as the Lopes (11-11, 5-3 WAC) downed Chicago State (0-23, 0-8 WAC), 59-43, on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center.
Gajewski tallied her fourth 20-point game this season, as the guard shot 10-17 from the field and 4-8 from the perimeter. She also added four rebounds and a free throw to her game resume.
Fellow senior
Brie Mobley had 11 points for her 20th double-digit game of the season. The guard added a team-best six assists and four boards as well.
Senior
August Touchard tied Mobley in assists with six, while adding nine points, four steals and a rebound.
After a slow start in the first half and a slim, 25-24 lead heading to the locker room for half time, the Lopes came out with fire and outscored the Cougars, 19-8, in the third quarter.
The momentum continued, as GCU held CSU to 11 points in the fourth to come out on top, 59-43, for the sweep over the Cougars.
Junior
Kavita Akula contributed six points from a pair of 3-pointers, while fellow junior
ShaRon Miller had a team-best seven rebounds and four points.
Freshman
Camille Hailey and sophomore
Vanessa Murphy had two points apiece.
GCU returns home for its final three games inside the GCU Arena this season. The Lopes host UTRGV and New Mexico State on Thursday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 10, respectively, before ending the home portion of the schedule against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 17.
