PHOENIX – The beach volleyball season got underway this season as the GCU squad is ranked No. 10 in the country in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Kristen Rohr and her squad are looking to build on last season's success and look to compete in the postseason.
On the first day, the Lopes took on No. 14 Cal Poly and No. 6 LSU. The Lopes will face USC and Pepperdine on Saturday, the second day of opening weekend, both teams are also ranked in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
In the first dual of the night against Cal Poly, the Lopes fell to the Mustangs 2-3, with the No. 1 pairing of
Molly Turner and
Katie Pyles winning their match in three sets, 17-21, 21-19, 15-4. The number three pairing of
Bella Bauman and
Taylor Jarzombek also won their match-up and were able to do it in straight sets, 21-19, 21-15.
In the second dual against No. 6 LSU, the Lopes again fell in a tough match-up 2-3, all five matches finished in straight sets; the second and fifth pairings came away with victories for the Lopes.
The number two pairing of
Jessica Stansfield and
Hannah Towne were able to down the Tiger opposition 21-17 and 21-16, with the defense of Stansfield and the blocking capabilities of Towne proving crucial down the stretch.
Katie Sarber and
Jessica Clark were the number five pairing that took the two-set match from LSU with identical 21-13 scores.
The Lopes will face Pepperdine and USC Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively as GCU will look for their first wins of the season.
