The camp will invite rising high school seniors, juniors and select sophomores with as many as 600 top boys basketball prospects visiting the GCU campus. A committee of NCAA and National Association of Basketball Coaches representatives will select the pool of prospects through a nomination and selection process.
GCU will be the host for the West region and host two sessions. Other host sites including University of Houston (South), University of Illinois (Midwest) and University of Connecticut (East).
"For GCU to be selected alongside some other top-notch campuses is further confirmation of the University's growing profile and commitment to campus facilities for its students," GCU Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught said. "We're excited to work with the NCAA to make this a great event for the participants and our campus."
GCU emerged as an ideal host for the camp with the unveiling of the new Canyon Activities Center on campus. The 135,000-square-foot building is set to open for use by all GCU students in early January, providing the opportunity to play as many as 10 basketball games simultaneously under the same roof.
"We are incredibly honored and excited to be one of the four schools to be selected to host the camp in its inaugural year," said GCU Associate Athletics Director for Facilities and Operations Tim Baron, who also will serve as the camp's venue manager. "This is a testament to the vision of GCU for building out the campus in a way that can service our students as well as the community. The camp will be a collaborative effort with so many groups on campus and will really showcase our great University."
The NCAA introduced its youth development camps as a part of its reforms to college basketball, aiming to integrate the higher education experience with the traditional recruiting process.
