Nikolaev, Hufnagel Toscani win Swimmer and Diver of the Week
Grand Canyon's Mark Nikolaev and Pietro Hufnagel Toscani won WAC Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week for Oct. 1-8.
Nikolaev, a senior from Seltso, Russia, won all six events in which he participated at the TYR Fall Classic at Florida International. His time in the 100-yard backstroke (47.33) made the NCAA B cut and currently ranks him No. 2 in the NCAA. Nikolaev also won the 200 backstroke (1:46.68) and contributed to the Lopes' four first-place relays, including the 200 medley (1:30.45), 400 medley (3:17.45), 200 free (1:21.86) and 400 free (3:02.04).
Hufnagel Toscani, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, swept the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the TYR Fall Classic. He won the 1-meter competition with a score of 280.20 and the 3-meter dive with 275.90. Hufnagel Toscani claimed the titles by a combined 23.95 points between both events.
GCU returns to action Saturday, when it hosts Arizona for the first time in program history. The Wildcats are coming off top-25 NCAA Championships finishes for men (No. 18) and women (No. 23) last season.
