PHOENIX - On a day where he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves, outfielder
Garrison Schwartz earned another accolade for an outstanding season with the Lopes. Schwartz was named to the second team of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) / Rawlings All-West Region team. Schwartz is the first ever individual from Grand Canyon to receive All-Region honors at the Division I level.
"We're excited and proud for Garrison to be named to the team," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "It's yet another feather in his cap to a great career that he's had here at GCU. It's just a tribute to the hard work he's put in to reach this level."
Schwartz wrapped up his third season with the Lopes, a year where he was named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Year and first team All-WAC. The right fielder started all 54 games for GCU, hitting .303 overall and .384 in conference play. To go along with his solid batting average, he also had a team-best 19 doubles, a team-best 8 home runs and a team-best 49 RBIs. He led the conference in doubles and on-base percentage during conference play.
The Phoenix native added yet another accolade to a highly-decorated resume in three seasons at Grand Canyon. In addition to the All-West Region and Player of the Year recognition, Schwartz was the 2017 WAC Preseason Player of the Year, 2016 first team All-WAC, 2015 second team All-WAC and 2015 WAC Freshman of the Year.
As a relatively unheralded graduate of Desert Vista High School, Schwartz burst on to the scene with 70 hits and a .357 batting average as a freshman.
"To come here as a walk-on and accomplish everything he's done on the field so far, he has been exceptional," Stankiewicz concluded.
Schwartz has been a key part of GCU's two WAC Regular Season Championships, coming in his freshman year in 2015 and this past season in 2017.
