Grand Canyon's basketball night at Talking Stick Resort Arena did not go as well as hoped, but GCU did get an assist for one victory Tuesday.
The University of Arizona, playing its first game in Phoenix in nine years, might not have knocked off No. 7 Texas A&M without the help of the Havocs. The GCU students arrived early for the Lopes' nightcap game of the Valley of the Sun Shootout doubleheader. Fortunately for the Wildcats, they were seated behind the basket that Texas A&M shot at in the second half.
With Arizona leading by three points and two seconds remaining, Texas A&M point guard Duane Wilson was fouled on a 3-pointer and went to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Havocs broke out the gigantic fidget spinners and other distractions, prompting the Aggies' 95 percent free throw shooter to miss his first attempt. Arizona won 67-64.
"I learned a lot about GCU when we played them last year," Wildcats head coach Sean Miller said. "We have a lot of respect for them. They're the only group of people in my nine years at Arizona that I've heard at McKale (Center). I never heard a crowd, even one person, yell something where they actually had a patch of fans. They (GCU fans) love college basketball and it's great for our state. Dan Majelre has done an amazing job there."
Arizona players thanked the Havocs on Twitter shortly after the game.
But the Havocs, which had 1,500 students at GCU's loss to St. John's, still let their loyalties show when Wildcats fans' "U-of-A" chant was drowned out by the Havocs' "G-C-U" chant.
