LONG BEACH, Calif.—The GCU women's tennis team kept their fall season rolling with another strong showing, this time at the Long Beach State Fall Invitational. Senior Kylie Waschuk advanced to the championship round in singles, along with other Lopes making deep runs in both the singles and doubles draws.

"The women did much better in their second tournament of the fall," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "They more than doubled the amount of singles wins and Kylie Waschuk is playing some of the best tennis that she's played since she's come to Grand Canyon."

Waschuk had a great tournament, advancing to the championship match of Singles Flight D before losing. Waschuk won a tough first round match against Abbie Valera of UC Riverside, 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4). After the first round Waschuk cruised to the final winning in straight sets in two straight matches. Anna Romeka of Loyola Marymount defeated Waschuk in the final 6-2, 6-0.

Martina Lo Pumo, Celina Buhr, and Emilia Occhipinti all won singles matches over the weekend, as GCU won six single matches as a team.

In doubles the duo of Buhr/Occhipinti advanced to the consolation final in Doubles Flight A. After losing the first round match, Buhr and Occhipinti regrouped and won two straight matches before falling to Romeka/Anderson of Loyola Marymount in the final.

Kylie Waschuk and Mya Etienne teamed up and advanced to the semifinals of Draw B, and freshman duo Autum Prudhomme/Martina Lo Pumo won two straight matches to finish off the weekend.

The Lopes now turn their attention to the ITA Southwest Regional on Oct. 19-22. The team will have two weeks of practice before heading back to San Diego.
