DENVER – Grand Canyon freshman
Francois Musitelli was named the men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for January 23-29. Musitelli earned the award for the first time in his career after his performance in GCU's two wins over Northern Colorado and Air Force. Seattle U's Caroline Maltby was named the women's WAC Player of the Week.
"Francois earning this award is representative of the strong class of freshmen we brought in this year to the team," head coach Greg Prudhomme noted. "They are all doing a great job. For Francois, being able to step up to the number 1 position this past weekend and help the team by getting a couple of wins, it was a great effort. We have those expectations of all of our players that they are able to play in any position of the lineup. We have a lot of depth on the team, and we were really happy to see Francois starting his first spring semester strong."
Musitelli, from Dijon, France, won both of his flight one singles matches against Northern Colorado and Air Force. His first win of the weekend happened when he beat Kyle Pease of NCU 7-5, 6-2. The following day, he clinched the team victory for GCU by defeating Fumagalli of Air Force by scores of 7-5, 6-1. He is undefeated at No. 1 singles so far this season.
Musitelli also teamed up with partner
Mathieu Rajaonah to beat an Air Force duo in flight 2 doubles, winning 6-3. His lone defeat of the weekend was a doubles loss to Northern Colorado by a score of 7-5.
