PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team had a chance to give back to its community that supports them on the court as the Lopes assisted Habitat for Humanity. The Lopes woke up before sunrise to arrive early in Surprise to help out its community as the women's basketball team was out working outdoors taking part in restoring a house.
"We would like to thank Habitat for Humanity for allowing us to serve the Surprise community," GCU women's basketball assistant coach
Milee Karre said. "Our players and staff learned what service is really about working with Habitat and are committed to more great projects for the rest of 2016. Having the chance to help finish a home for a family is an absolute blessing."
The Lopes arrived to Surprise at 6:15 in the morning and started to landscaped the whole house. Through four hours of labor, GCU players rolled up their sleeves and was able to lend a helping hand to a family that needed assistance and provide a renovated home, bringing smiles to a family.
"We feel grateful to be able to do something hands on to give back to the community that gives us so much support throughout the season," senior guard
Alyx Bloom said. "It was also a great opportunity to work together as a team off the basketball court and make a difference."
Instead of working out in the gym, the Lopes received instructions on what to do from Habitat Central Arizona and moved over 14 tons of gravel in just two hours. GCU always does its best to work together on court in order to come out with a win for the team and by helping out with Habitat for Humanity, the Lopes worked together as a team and came out with a win for its community.
