PHOENIX – When you attend a sporting event at Grand Canyon University, you are witnessing great student-athletes give it their all on the field and on the court. What you will also witness at a GCU sporting event is one of the loudest student sections in the country, the GCU Havocs. Recently a few members of the Havocs traveled to Ohio to participate in the National Collegiate Student Section Association (NCSSA).
"Being recognized for being one of the best student sections in the country along with schools with such rich traditions was extremely humbling," Havocs president Steve Hunsaker said. "To see how our gameday experience is starting to make noise nationwide is such an amazing accomplishment for the GCU student body and the school as a whole."
Hosted by the University of Cincinnati, the NCSSA is designed to enhance and improve the collegiate student fan experience across the nation. Their goal is to bring student section leaders together to collaborate while building a stronger collegiate atmosphere and utilizing integrity and sportsmanship.
Over 50 student section leaders represented by 25 schools came together including Florida, Ohio State, Miami and fellow in-state school, Arizona.
Whether it was Midnight Madness, the 'March to Match' during soccer season or the Purple Pre-Game Party at GCU Arena, the Havocs have always been there to support its fellow students. This year at GCU men's basketball game versus New Mexico State, the Havocs filled GCU Arena setting the record for most fans in attendance for a GCU basketball game with 7,413 fans. Beginning a new tradition this past soccer season with the 'March to the Match,' the Havocs also help set the record at the time for the most fans in attendance for a college soccer match in the state of Arizona with 2,565 fans.
It is no doubt that the Havocs have made their stamp on college athletics, proving to be one of the loudest and biggest student sections in the country that always supports their teams day-in and day-out. Not many students will travel to go see its basketball team play a conference game in another state but this year over 200 Havocs made the trip to Las Cruces, NM. to watch their Lopes take on the Aggies.
"Every GCU student, employee and faculty member should be extremely proud of the accomplishments we have made as a school," Hunsaker added. "The sky is the limit for this school and we are all extremely fortunate to be a part of it."
Not only was it a great opportunity for the Havocs to share ideas with other schools and create friendships but it was another chance for the country to see something special being built on 33rd ave. and Camelback. It is already one of the best student sections in the country and it only going to get better next season when you are at GCU sporting events starting in the Fall.
