PHOENIX – Former Grand Canyon men's basketball standout
Grandy Glaze participated in a pre-draft workout with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.
Glaze was at the Sixers practice facility for the workout, along with a number of NBA hopefuls including Stephen Zimmerman (UNLV), Bryn Forbes (Michigan St.), Stefan Jankovic (Hawai'i), Retin Obasohan (Alabama) and David Walker (Northeastern).
"I definitely wanted to show them my motor," Glaze told members of the Philadelphia media after the workout. "I bring my hard hat and just work hard with the guys to be a team-guy and let everything else follow up. I think I did a really good job today. I think everybody did a good job."
When asked if his college experience helped prepare him for an NBA workout, Glaze was quick to mention what an instrumental role head coach
Dan Majerle and the Lopes 2015-16 schedule played in his development.
"Grand Canyon went Division I three years ago, so we played pretty good competition," Glaze said. "We couldn't go to the NCAA Tournament this year, but we went 27-7. Playing under Coach Majerle was a blessing. Him, being a 50-year-old with child-like energy and knowing the game and running NBA concepts definitely got me ready."
Glaze made the most of his final year of eligibility, earning national headlines as the 2016 Riley Wallace award winner, given to the top transfer in Division I college basketball after averaging 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds while shooting just under 60 percent from the field for the 2015-16 season under Majerle. He was a consistent force in the paint, leading the Lopes with 14 double-doubles, including single-game highs of 29 points and 15 rebounds, as the Lopes advanced to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
The 6-foot-6 forward from Toronto, Ontario picked up several other awards in his lone season at GCU. Glaze was named All-WAC Second-Team, All-WAC Newcomer team, John McLendon Classic MVP and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Region VI Second-Team.
Some important upcoming NBA dates include the 2016 NBA draft on June 23 and the NBA Summer Leagues in Orlando (July 2-8), Utah (July 4-7) and Las Vegas (July 8-18).
