PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon baseball team dropped the mid-week game to Nevada, 11-10 in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon. The Lopes record drops to 23-27-1. GCU honored its eight seniors as they shined in their final home game, combining for six-of-the 10 Lopes' RBIs.
In his first career start, the senior,
Jaren Drummond, took the mound and pitched a season-high 3.1 innings. The senior allowed two runs off three hits with two strikeouts. The Lopes pitching struggled as it took seven pitchers to get through the rest of the game, allowing eight runs.
The seniors came to play for Grand Canyon. In the bottom of the first, senior
Paul Panaccione got things started for the Lopes with a single up the middle. The Lopes followed with a walk and infield single to load the bases for the first time in the game. Senior
Brandon Smith walked in the first run of the game as the Lopes took an early lead. Later in the inning, senior
Krysthian Leal ripped a two-out single to left field to cross two Lopes, extending their lead to 3-0. It was the first time the Lopes scored in the first inning since May 1 in Grand Canyon's 10-5 victory against Chicago State.
The Wolf Pack quickly responded in the second inning, as an infield single set up a two-run home run by Bryce Greager to cut the Lopes' lead to 3-2.
The Lopes had an answer of their own in the second frame. A single, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Lopes once again. This time around, the Lopes took full advantage of the opportunity as
Greg Saenz recorded a sac-fly to center field, scoring the Lopes' first run of the inning. Shortly after, Smith was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Lopes for the third time of game. In the next at bat,
Matt Haggerty cleared the bases with a double down the third base line that broke open the game and extended the Lopes' lead to 7-2.
Nevada started to claw back with one run in the fifth inning but the Lopes continued to respond on offense during Senior Day as Panaccione ripped a two-run homer to deep left, extending the lead to 9-3. After a double by
Garrison Schwartz, Smith followed with a single up the middle to score the Lopes' 10th run of the game.
The Wolf Pack continued to fight back as they collected four hits, including two triples to score four runs in the seventh, cutting the lead to 10-7. With two outs in the ninth, GCU's
AJ Franks gave up three runs that eventually sent the high-scoring game to extra innings, tied 10-10.
With their eighth consecutive run, Nevada scored one in the 10th to take their first lead of the game, 11-10 that ended up being the deciding factor.
In their final game at Brazell Stadium, the seniors delivered as the four GCU players in the lineup (Panacionne, Smith, Leal and Steirstorfer) combined hit 6-for-16 with six of the Lopes' 10 RBI. Panaccione went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Leal was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Thomas Lerouge went 5-for-6 with two runs scored. Five hits was a career-high for the sophomore.
In the last series of the season, GCU will travel to McAllen, Texas to face UTRGV in a three-game series from Thursday May 19 to Saturday May 21.
