GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Grand Canyon secured a series sweep of North Dakota with its first run-rule victory of the season, topping the Fighting Hawks 14-2 at Kraft Field on Sunday. GCU finished with 15 hits on the afternoon, posting a 10-run seventh inning, while
Cameron Brendel kept UND in check with a career high of eight strikeouts.
Rainy and windy conditions plus a 38-minute break between the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings did not keep Brendel from delivering a complete game victory. The senior, who was moved to a Sunday start due to Friday's graduation, pitched seven innings of six-hit baseball, limiting the Fighting Hawks to two runs and one walk.
"I flew in yesterday and knew I had a job to do," Brendel said. "I went out there and did the best I could. I tried to establish my fastball in the zone. If you get ahead in the count, it makes it a lot easier for us. Once I got ahead with the fastball, it made my changeup and slider work a lot more."
Brendel retired the first six batters he faced and allowed single tallies in the third and seventh frames. He improved his record to 4-2 overall while lowering his ERA in starts to 3.00.
"He did a good job. He went out there and really set the tone," pitching coach
Nathan Choate said. "He was aggressive early and he had his changeup working really well. Brought home a good sweep."
Grand Canyon got the action started in a hurry with the first four batters recording base hits. An RBI single from
Garrison Schwartz scored
Thomas Lerouge and an RBI single from
Zach Malis scored
Austin Bull to put the Lopes in front 2-0. Schwartz picked up his second RBI of the contest with a no-doubt home run to lead off the third inning. It was the sophomore's fourth homer of the season.
The Fighting Hawks turned two hits into a run in the third inning, as Brendel hit a batter with two outs to extend the frame for North Dakota. The 3-1 score was as close as UND would get the rest of the way, as the Lopes ran away with the game.
Brick Paskiewicz almost single-handedly manufactured the Lopes' fourth run. GCU's starting left fielder reached on an infield single and moved to third, picking up the first two stolen bases of his GCU career.
Jared McDonald knocked a ball up the middle for the second time in the game, scoring Paskiewicz to put the Lopes in front 4-1.
Things got out of hand in the top of the seventh. In all, Grand Canyon sent 16 batters to the plate and logged five base hits. North Dakota used five pitchers in the inning, and the relievers combined for nearly 65 pitches and eight walks. GCU scored a season-high 10 runs in the frame to put the game well out of reach.
Every Grand Canyon batter recorded either a hit or an RBI with
Tyler Wyatt posting his second straight three-hit game, while Schwartz and Malis both posted three-RBI games. Bull and Schwartz each scored three times.
The Lopes swept a road series for the second time this season after taking three from CSU Bakersfield to open April. In the series, GCU boasted an impressive .373 team batting average while the pitching staff featured a 2.52 ERA. The bullpen was only used twice and only needed 4.2 innings of work over the three games. Wyatt led the club offensively with a 7-for-13 weekend.
Grand Canyon's season-long eight-game road trip winds down with a pair of mid-week non-conference affairs vs. Big 12 schools. The Lopes will take on Kansas on Tuesday at 4 p.m. MST before heading down the road to face Kansas State on Wednesday at 4:35 p.m. MST. Both games will be televised (ESPN3/WatchESPN and Fox College Sports-Pacific, respectively) but will not be broadcast on the GCU Radio Network.
