PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon softball team dropped the series finale 9-1 to New Mexico State on Saturday night at Stapelton-Pierson Stadium. GCU struggled to find consistency on both offense and defense and ended the night with just
three hits and left five on base. The Lopes fall to 29-15 and 4-5 in conference play. The Lopes honored its two seniors,
Kailey Regester and
Nicole Newbury for their four-year commitment to the softball program on Senior Night. In their final home series, Newbury went 3-for-9 with a double and Regester tossed 7.1 innings, with pair of back-to-back strikeouts.
The Aggies took an early lead in the opening frame of the series finale. Starting things off for New Mexico State, a walk and a double set up a two-RBI single for Corrin Green to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead. The NMSU offensive attack never ceased as they put up five more runs in the fifth and the last pair in the final frame.
With only three hits in the game, the Lopes still had their chances, leaving five batters on base. In the bottom of the fifth, GCU threatened with bases loaded but were not able to bring in any runs when New Mexico State's Victoria Castro had a diving catch in deep center and doubled up the runner on second to end the Lopes offensive attack. The Lopes kept fighting on senior night as
Camree Wartman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring GCU's lone run of the contest. But GCU could not produce enough offense to keep up with the Aggie run total and fell 9-1 in the seventh.
At the plate, Camree Wartman was 1-for-3 and picked up her seventh homer of the year.Lopes Quotes:
Head Coach Ann Pierson"It's frustrating to come out and win like we did in the very first game and then to have the unfortunate outcomes in Game 2 and 3, we've got some things to work through over the next couple of weekends. We still have to realize that while it's been a great season, we still have a lot left to do. We're getting some key experience here and we're hoping that it's going to help us out over these next couple of weeks. We just have to keep working."
Next up: The Lopes return to the road for the final two series of the season. GCU will travel to Orem, Utah to take on Utah Valley on Friday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. MST. for the three-game WAC series.
