Lopes finish out Fiesta on Siesta Key 2-3 overall

SIESTA KEY, FLA. -- The Grand Canyon University beach volleyball fell 3-2 to North Florida in their fifth and final match of the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament, finishing out the weekend 2-3.

"I thought we were well prepared coming into this tournament," said head coach Kristen Rohr. "We saw a lot of tough competition this weekend which was great for us. Some of the matches could have gone either way."

The two victories on Sunday came in high-scoring matches on Courts 1 and 5. Brooke Razo/Kami Dickerson won in three sets 20-22, 22-20, 15-12 while Mackenzie Phelps/Shannon Dugan won in straight sets 21-17, 24-22.

After dominating the first set 21-11 on Court 2, Aleksandra Wachowicz/Molly Turner couldn't maintain the momentum, falling 16-21, 17-19 in the final two sets for their first loss of the tournament. In another grueling three-set match on Court 3, Jordyn Sanchez/Emilee Erichsen did not go down easy, coming within two points on every set. They led off with a 21-18 win, but ultimately fell after losing the rest of the sets 21-23, 18-20. Finally, on Court 4, Rebecca Conrad/Chloe Jenkins fell in straight sets 21-17, 21-11.

"The girls played hard and dealt with some difficult wind elements that we don't get to see in Phoenix often," continued Rohr. "Although we are not totally satisfied with all of our results, we have two more big weekends coming up and opportunities to continuously get better and prove ourselves."

Aleksandra Wachowicz/Molly Turner led the Lopes at 4-1 on the weekend followed by Mackenzie Phelps/Shannon Dugan at 3-2. The team falls to 13-6 on the season going into their final, back-to-back, home matches next weekend on April 16. The Lopes will face off again Grossmont College at 9 a.m. MST and San Diego State at 11 a.m. MST.
