PHEONIX – The Grand Canyon baseball team opened up its three-game series against Omaha on Friday night at Brazell Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,301. The Lopes left six runners on the bases tonight dropping the 7-2 contest to the Mavericks. GCU is now 5-4 this season.
"We faced a good pitcher tonight who has had a lot of success," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "We left some scoring opportunities on the bases and they didn't late in the game. That proved to be the difference but we will regroup and bounce back tomorrow."
Both teams traded runs in the third inning as Omaha scored in the top of the third off a single to take a 1-0 lead over GCU. The Lopes responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own from the bat of Zach Steirstorfer, allowing
Matt Haggerty to score, evening the score.
Jorge Perez went six innings, throwing nine strikeouts, one strikeout shy of his career record. The Mavericks retook the lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to jump out to a 3-1 lead. After Omaha added another run in the seventh inning but, the Lopes cut into Omaha's lead in the eighth when
Garrison Schwartz singled, scoring
Thomas Lerouge from second base.
The Lopes were able to hit off Omaha's pitching staff with seven hits but the Mavericks were able to limit the damage, leaving six runners on base.
GCU will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 5, when they play game two against Omaha at Brazell Stadium.
