PHOENIX – After an impressive year with the Grand Canyon men's basketball program,
Grandy Glaze now has the opportunity to begin his professional career, as he was selected by the Delaware 87ers in the 2016 NBA D-League Players Draft.
"I am really happy for Grandy because he came to GCU with something to prove and he did exactly what he said he was going to do," head coach
Dan Majerle said. "We gave him an opportunity and he took full advantage of it. Whether it was scoring, rebounding or bringing constant energy he brought it on a nightly basis. I couldn't be more proud of him and the way he will represent GCU."
Glaze was selected with the seventh pick in the third round and was just one of four players from the Western Athletic Conference taken in the draft. The former Lope made quite the impression on the Philadelphia 76ers organization as he participated in their pre-draft workout, leading up to the NBA Draft. Glaze is the first player from GCU to be selected in the NBA D-League Draft under Majerle and the first since GCU made the jump to Division I.
Glaze made the most of his final year of eligibility, earning national headlines as the 2016 Riley Wallace award winner, given to the top transfer in Division I college basketball after averaging 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds while shooting just under 60 percent from the field for the 2015-16 season under Majerle. He was a consistent force in the paint, leading the Lopes with 14 double-doubles, including single-game highs of 29 points and 15 rebounds, as the Lopes advanced to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
The 6-foot-6 forward from Toronto, Ontario picked up several other awards in his lone season at GCU. Glaze was named All-WAC Second-Team, All-WAC Newcomer team, John McLendon Classic MVP and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Region VI Second-Team.
"We want to continue to bring in better players that have the chance to develop and play at the next level," Majerle added. "The sad thing about Grandy is we only had him for a year. We will always work hard for our players that want to put in the effort and play on the professional level.
GCU is starting to make some noise in the D-League as Glaze was selected by the 87ers and former GCU standout, Daniel Alexander, made the Northern Arizona Suns roster.
"GCU is a place where players can prove they can play at the next level. Now we have to keep it going so guys can play eventually in the NBA and overseas."
