PHOENIX-- The Grand Canyon softball program and head coach
Ann Pierson have announced its 2017 slate of contests. The Lopes 2017 schedule features top-tier matchups against seven teams that appeared in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. GCU will also host Pac-12 foe and 2016 NCAA Super Regional finalist Washington this season.
"We are really excited about our schedule for the spring 2017 season. We will have the opportunity to play some unbelievable opponents in Arizona, Northwestern, Baylor, Utah and many more," Pierson said.
After finishing the 2016 season at 35-15, the best mark since joining Division I ranks and tying for second in the Western Athletic Conference, Pierson looks to build off of last year's success. GCU enters the 2017 campaign with a balanced squad that includes six newcomers.
The seven NCAA Tournament teams on GCU's schedule include Baylor, Washington, Arizona, Maine, CSU Bakersfield and BYU. Washington, Arizona and Utah advanced to the NCAA Tournament Super Regional rounds in May.
The Lopes will play in five tourneys before WAC play begins, including a pair of GCU hosted tournaments. The Lopes will begin the season at home for the third-consecutive year as they host the GCU Invitational on Feb. 10-12, welcoming Northern Colorado and Bradley to Phoenix.
GCU will debut in its away game slate as they travel to Waco, Texas to participate in the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor on Feb. 17-19. During the weekend, the Lopes will meet their first 2016 NCAA Tournament participant in Baylor and will also face Lamar and North Texas over the weekend.
Tournament action returns home as the Lopes host their final home tournament on Feb. 23-26. GCU will welcome San Jose State, Portland State, Nevada and Rhode Island to Phoenix during the weekend slate.
The following weekend, GCU will continue its homestand as it hosts Maine on Mar.4-5 in a trio of contests.
The Lopes will then head back on the road for a pair of tournaments in the Bay Area. First, GCU will play in a tournament hosted by Stanford on Mar. 10-12 as they meet Pac-12 foe Stanford. The Lopes will also face off against Cal Poly, Lehigh and UConn during tourney action.
The following weekend, GCU will return to the Bay Area on Mar. 17-19 and participate in its final tournament hosted by Santa Clara. The Lopes will not only meet Santa Clara but will also meet CSU Long Beach, Lehigh and Big 10 opponent Northwestern during the tourney slate.
The Lopes tests will continue as they return home to host 2016 NCAA Super Regional finalist Washington in a doubleheader contest on Tuesday, Mar.22 for the second time since transitioning to NCAA Division I play.
"We have the good fortune of hosting the University of Washington again and believe that our schedule will continue to push us and prepare us for the chance to play in post-season in the spring of 2018," Pierson added.
After enjoying a weekend off, the Lopes will head to Tucson, Ariz. to face their second Super Regional Finalist in in-state foe Arizona in a mid-week contest on Tuesday, Mar. 28.
GCU will debut its WAC schedule at home as they play host to Seattle U on Mar. 31-Apr. 1. The Lopes will then hit the road for their WAC road debut at Missouri-Kansas City on Apr. 7-8 before returning to Phoenix for a two-week conference homestand as they welcome CSU Bakersfield on Apr.14-15 and Utah Valley on Apr.21-22.
In the WAC finale, GCU will travel to Las Cruces as they face off against conference rival New Mexico State on Apr. 28-29.
GCU will conclude its 2017 campaign against a pair of perennial powerhouse programs as they travel to Utah to face its third and final Pac-12 opponent at Utah in a doubleheader contest on May 2. In the 2017 season finale, the Lopes will play BYU on May 3 in Provo.
"This is our toughest schedule overall since we've been at the Division I level and will be a great challenge and learning experience for our program," Pierson said.
