PHOENIX – Grand Canyon baseball head coach
Andy Stankiewicz continues to build one of the best college baseball programs in the country and as a result, the Lopes have been able to recruit top-talent across the country. The talent and depth has been recognized from pro scouts as the Lopes hosted their annual Scout Day
"One of our goals here at GCU is to develop a program where guys feel that they have an opportunity to play professional baseball," Stankiewicz said. "If our players are good enough to play at the next level, we will do whatever we can because our staff has a great relationship with scouts in the MLB. The scouts we have out here speak highly of our players and that is a credit to the hard work they put in here on the field."
GCU baseball and Major League Baseball scouts have known each other quite well recently as four players have been drafted in the last two MLB Drafts, most recently
Paul Panaccione selected by the Washington Nationals in the 10th round.
"All of the scouts here have great respect for Andy because he has been in our shoes having been a scout at the pro level and he is one of our all-time favorites," Arizona Diamondbacks scout Clark Crist said. "He (Stankiewicz) has a unique quality of being able to relate to his players and to scouts. You know when you are scouting a GCU player you are getting a player who hustles and knows the game already. Stankiewicz and his staff teach a pro-perspective so they will know the little things it takes to become a professional player."
Three players on GCU's 2015 roster were drafted;
Chad De La Guerra was drafted in 17th round by the Boston Red Sox,
David Walker was taken in the 31st round by the Chicago White Sox and
Andrew Naderer was picked up by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round.
"First and foremost our guys play for Grand Canyon University," Stankiewicz added. "But if the opportunity presents itself to play professional baseball then they can achieve that here at GCU."
