SEATTLE – For the first time this season, the Grand Canyon women's basketball team swept a road trip within the Western Athletic Conference. After Friday's win against CSU Bakersfield, GCU followed up with an impressive performance at the Connolly Center defeating Seattle 67-54. GCU improves to 12-11 this season and now has a winning record in the WAC (4-3) for the first time this season.
History was made as senior guard
Courtney Hayes broke the Grand Canyon record for the most assists in a single season. With five assists against Seattle U, Hayes now has 157 assists this season, surpassing the record of 152.
Dana Jones recorded 25 points, her second-highest total of the season, along with seven rebounds and three assists.
The Lopes were 3-8 this season when trailing after the first quarter, and Seattle jumped out to an early 16-13 lead. The Lopes, however, were able to make adjustments heading into the second quarter. GCU tightened up its defense in the period, allowing just eight points in the second quarter. Meanwhile, GCU's offense picked up, scoring 15 points in the second quarter to jump out to a 28-24 lead going into halftime.
After flipping the script following the first period, GCU did more of the same throughout the second half. Outscoring the Redhawks by six in the third quarter and three in the fourth, Grand Canyon cruised to a 13-point win. It marked the Lopes' largest conference road win since defeating Chicago State by 25 on Jan. 31 last year.
In addition to Jones' 25-point outburst,
Alyx Bloom scored 15 and
Jessica Gajewski chipped in 11.
Grand Canyon returns to GCU Arena for the next three games including a rematch with Seattle U on Feb. 13. Before that, however, the Lopes face the two WAC leaders with New Mexico State on Feb. 4 and UT Rio Grande Valley on Feb. 6. Games vs. UTRGV and Seattle U will be broadcasted on Cox 7 Arizona.
