PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University men's and women's cross country teams will continue their season this Saturday in Santa Clarita, Calif., at the Master's College's Mustang Challenge. This marks their second straight season competing in the event. Last season, the women's team finished sixth of 17 while the men's squad placed eighth of 17.
The Lopes opened up their season at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz. Both squads earned the best times in school history and placed fourth in the event.
The women's squad was led by senior
Kelsi Klotter who posted the fastest time of her collegiate career at the event (15:46.2) for a 10
th place finish. She was followed closely by
Emily Wilkinson's 13
th place (15:57.0) and
Mariah Montoya's 15
th place (16:07.3). Thirteen of the 14 athletes bested their times from the race last season.
For the men's team,
Samuel Proctor beat his personal record by two minutes to place seventh in the race with a time of 23:27.2.
Matthew Jackson was the Lopes' second finisher at 17
th (24:12.3). Ten athletes earned new personal records for the 4.5 mile competition.
Both Klotter and Proctor were awarded Western Athletic Conference Runners of the Week honors for Aug. 31-Sept. 6.
