Grand Canyon University has announced the hiring of Kristen Rohr as the next beach volleyball coach.
Rohr has been competing professionally in beach volleyball since May 2007, ranking as high as fifth in the country. She began her career with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and has spent the last two years as a member of the National Volleyball League tour. During her career, she has had a 10-tournament win streak and been a member of the top-ranked team in Florida for the past five years.
Additionally, Rohr has been the head coach of Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota, Fla., for five seasons, leading the squad to two district titles and two runner-up finishes. She co-founded the Coastline Volleyball Club team where she has been the director and a coach to high school athletes since May 2012.
"Kristen brings a high level of expertise as a coach and a wealth of experience to run the business side of our Beach Volleyball Program," said GCU Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught. "We are really excited for her to join our GCU team! We welcome her to our great campus!
Rohr graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2005 with a degree in family consumer science. During her collegiate career, she was a four-year starter for the Wildcats and was named All-SEC and team MVP. She received her master's degree in counselor education from Capella University in 2011, graduating with a 3.8 GPA from the Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society.
"I am both honored and thrilled to accept this position as the Head Beach Volleyball Coach and to be joining the GCU family!" Rohr said. "The commitment to its student athletes shown by the entire Athletics Staff was apparent to me early on and I am excited to be a part of it. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity and I look forward to having the chance to impart my knowledge and love for the game on the GCU Sand Volleyball Student Athletes. Go Lopes!"
Rohr competed at Venice High School in Venice, Fla., leading the team to a state championship and being selected as MVP during both her junior and senior years. She replaces Jose Lugo who coached the 2014 season.
