The Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association released their 16-team National Tournament bracket last night and as expected, Grand Canyon has been seeded No. 1.
The tournament will be contested from May 11-16 in both Irvine and Orange, Calif.
The Antelopes, making their third national appearance in their four years in the MCLA, will begin play on May 11 at 4:30 p.m. (AZ) against No. 16 Purdue. The matchup will be played in Irvine.
GCU is fresh off a 14-13 win over Arizona State in the Southwest Lacrosse Championship, played yesterday afternoon in Orange, Calif.
The Lopes are 12-1 this season and are riding an 11-game winning streak into the tourney. Purdue comes in at 9-5, playing out of the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference.
The Antelopes sport a high-powered offense that is keyed by Dean Fairall and Carson Barton. Fairall is seventh in the entire MCLA with 72 points (44 goals, 28 assists). Barton has buried 41 goals this season and has 71 points to his credit. Brandon Suchand mans the net duties and has stopped .623 percent of his shots this season. (Stats provided by MCLA)
The two teams will enter the First Round contest having both yielded 114 goals this season. GCU, however, has scored 204 times, compared to 135 for the Boilermaker Lax squad.
The winner will advance to the MCLA Quarterfinals to face the winner of No. 8 Oregon State/ No. 9 Cal Poly. That will be played on May 12 at 4 p.m. (AZ), also in Irvine. City rival, Arizona State, earned the No. 2 seed and could once again face the Antelopes if both reach the finals. GCU has downed the Sun Devils in both of their meetings this season. Along with ASU, fellow SLC mates Chapman (No. 4) and San Diego State (No. 10) earned berths into the national draw.
The entire bracket can be viewed here. The MCLA website will provide live video links for the entire tournament.
