Lopes Close Out Regular Season at Outrigger Resorts Invitational

The Grand Canyon University sand volleyball team (9-6) completed play in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The team faced San Jose State (0-14) in a 4-1 win to open the day before falling 4-1 to No. 2 Hawai'i (15-1).

Mackenzie Phelps and Shannon Dugan was the lone team to pick up two wins for the day, taking their record for the trip to a perfect 5-0. They cruised past San Jose State's top pair before battling in a 21-19, 21-18 contest over Hawai'i's Brittany Tiegs and Sammie Brown. Phelps and Dugan won the fight with 17 kills and 12 kills, respectively. Dugan also earned four blocks in the matchup.

Alex Goodman and Becca Conrad gave a strong showing against Hawai'i's Gianna Guinasso and Hannah Zalopany, winning the opening game 21-15, before falling just short in the next two 21-19, 15-13.

Megan Glennie and Kaitlynn Ausmus also had a competitive match, being defeated in a close 21-17, 21-19 contest.

Against San Jose State, the Lopes netted all four points in two-game matches.

Molly Turner and Emilee Erichsen earned the victory on court two, while Brooke Razo and Alex Green won their match on court three. Goodman and Conrad rounded out the four points, coasting past the fifth pair.

GCU's only three set match was on court four where Glennie and Ausmus fought in another tight matchup. They made a comeback in the second set with the solid 21-12 victory before falling 15-12 in the final game.
